After a brief break, the Champions League graced our screens yet again. We as football fans have been spoilt with various leagues and many cups to follow. Yet at times, it is the Champions League that we crave the most.

The first round of games for the week drew some interesting results.

The self proclaimed “greatest team” Arsenal, in their seemingly characteristic manner of late, were below par after securing a 2 goal lead. What they forgot was that it was a European competition, where even 2 goals may not provide enough cushion. Walcott and Giroud provided their goals in the first half, with Huntelaar pulling one back for the German side. The second  half saw Farfan equalise.

What has happened to the once rock solid defence? Conceding 5 to Reading, 2 to Manchester United and 2 to Schalke is very unusual. There is only so much you can blame on bad luck- as Arsenal risk over-using that excuse. Put simply, they are very porous at the back, with all the hard work in the first games being a distant memory. It is better to outscore your opponents if you have a porous defence, not throwing away points in a silly manner. The draw sees them second in their group with 7 points; sandwiched between Schalke’s 8 and Olympiakos’ 6- interesting!

Manchester City, who needed a miracle if they are to stay in the competition, did not do themselves any favours. You would think the reality of being on the verge of a group stage exit for the second successive season would provide the impetus to win. Not really. They went to 2-0 down in 17 minutes of play against Dutch champions Ajax. Toure’s acrobatics and Aguero’s finish levelled the score to set up a tense finish to the game. Unlike City, when it mattered the most, Ajax defended with their lives to ensure there was no heartbreak for them at the Etihad.

With Madrid having had to come back from behind on two occasions to secure a draw against German champions Dortmund, the table is shaping up interestingly. Dortmund still lead the group, a point ahead of Real Madrid. Manchester City trail second place with five points, sitting uncomfortably last- having amassed 2 points from 4 games. It may be harsh on the English champions, but that is Europe for you. However, on a positive note- if you can call it that, playing against the best makes you better!
